What is the difference between a sludge pump and a slurry pump?
The biggest difference between a sludge pump and a slurry pump is the thickness of the materials they move.
Slurry pumps work for liquid-solid mixes with 5% to 50% solids. In these mixes, solid pieces float fully in the liquid, and the whole mixture still flows easily. They come in three types: light, medium and heavy duty.
- Light slurry pumps are mostly used in paper mills to carry thin, low-wear pulp.
- Medium-duty slurry pumps are common in chemical processing and conventional wastewater treatment, handling mixtures with moderate solid concentration.
- Heavy-duty slurry pumps are widely used in mining, to carry sharp, wear-heavy materials like ore and waste tailings over long distances.
Sludge pumps, by contrast, target thick, sticky semi-solid wastes with a solid content as high as 50% to 80%. Such media no longer flow freely like conventional liquids, and many of them contain high-viscosity flocs, fibrous impurities or concentrated sludge after dehydration. Typical application scenarios include the transportation of sludge before and after dewatering in sewage treatment plants, the feeding of filter presses, and the delivery of high-viscosity oil sludge in the petroleum industry.
